Is it possible to tune a 6 string ukulele to a standard guitar tunning and have it work like a mini-guitar?

Mainly would the fret lengths of the uke be the same as those of a guitar and work with guitar strings and standard tuning? Idealy I'm trying to create a compact (and cheap) guitar that I easily take travelling. A ukulele would be the perfect size.
